Inye Kemabonta Profile

Inye Kemabonta is an Information Technology lawyer with a deep knowledge of the Nigerian Public Sector but who currently represents and advances the interest of private sector tech businesses. He is currently the Nigerian National Coordinator of AfICTA (Africa ICT Alliance), a not-for-profit body whose vision is to fulfil the promise of the digital age for everyone in Africa.

Over the last three and a half decades he worked in both the Legislative and Executive Arms of Government during which he chaired and served on several developmental initiatives in the Nigerian ICT industry, including the Federal Government program on ICT innovation and entrepreneurship in 2012 and Nigerian stakeholder adoption of draft ISO standards relating to IT.

As a consultant to NITDA (Nigeria’s Information Technology Development Agency) and later its Director of Standards and Regulation up to 2014, He worked on several pieces of legislation and subsidiary legislation for the IT Agency and the Federal Government of Nigeria, such as the Cybercrime Bill, Electronic Transaction Bill, Public Key Infrastructure Regulation, IT Project Clearance Regulation 2009, Data Protection Regulation 2013, Data Protection Bill, and the NITDA Act of 2007. 

He inspired and helped to develop the Local Content Initiative in ICT, which shaped the Nigerian ICT industry between 2000 and 2016 and earned him the title of “father of local content” by officials of the American Business Council and the Embassy). His pioneering work, along with other professionals, in the ICT space for the Nigerian Government actually helped in the establishment of the Nigerian National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) as envisioned, and the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NiRA). 

He has been a consultant to the World Bank on the Digital Economy under the Digital Economy for Africa (DE4A) and a member of the team that conducted the digital economy diagnostics of Nigeria in 2018. He was also a lead consultant to the Bank on the Nigeria GovTech Community Initiative. He has been an AU expert trainer on Internet Governance under the PRIDA initiative of the African Union Commission.

Apart from ICT, Law, and Behavioral Sciences, his professional and academic background includes Communication, Counseling and Human Resource Management. He conducts training in Public Speaking, Transformational Leadership, Transformative Regulation, Business and Developmental Communication, and Organizational Visioning Process.
